Why Decolonize Psychology?

When Europeans colonised the world, they knowingly or unknowingly set their ways of thinking, feelings and behaving as the standard for others to strive for.

What became known as 'psychology' became how middle class European brains operated, their ways of relating to each other, and how their children and families developed.

Working optimally in the 21st century means working beyond a Eurocentric approach.

This is decolonising psychology.

This is seeing the best of a range of cultures across the world as a reference point for what is good.

What if successful human development was about...
  • finding and orientating yourself to your purpose
  • advancing your community alongside individuation
  • developing spiritual stamina to withstand and thrive from setbacks,
  • the intelligence to meet the needs of your community
  • acquiring skills to become a good elder and ancestor
  • managing the challenges and gifts of growing old in a strange land
